Tips To Alter Your Clothes

Imperfections in your clothing don’t only hinder your appearance but also your style. Even though nothing beats a professional’s touch and expertise when it comes to alteration, there are several reasons why you should delve into tailoring your garments. This is an awesome DIY project to take up if you want to learn sewing or have time and budgetary constraints and can’t opt for a professional alteration service.

Let’s take a look at the easy and simple-to-follow steps to alter.

Set It Up

To avoid an alteration disaster, you should add the following items to your next Target run:

  • Sewing machine
  • Machine and hand sewing needles
  • Paper and sharp scissors
  • Seam unpicker
  • Tailor’s chalk
  • Tape measure
  • Rotary cutter
  • Pincushion, thimble, and thread

Practice Makes Perfect

Practice on old clothes to avoid ruining new ones. If you aim to make your clothes a size or multiple sizes smaller, outline the lines with chalk before cutting them. Sew it up and put it on to determine whether it fits you or not. Do this before you cut anything!

Too much fabric is not a thing since it can all be trimmed away. But once again, try on the garment before making any cuts since you’ll minimize the risk of having too little fabric.

NOTE: Use the right kind of thread when making alterations. Make it bendable!

SNIP, SNAP!

Living in a highly tech-based era, we can luckily take pictures of everything without any inconvenience. It’s a good idea to take photographs of the garment disassembling process as you go along every step. This will help document your progress, and you can easily look back and remember which alteration was made at which point. Taking multiple pictures has the extra benefit of serving as a visual reference of sorts. It acts as an aid for any future sewing experiments you’re willing to try.
